Setting a date
The next step is to set a date to stop drinking. Obviously this should be as soon as possible and, if there is a medical emergency, it should be immediately. If there is no medical emergency, then you might need to take a few things into consideration. For example, it could be difficult to stop drinking at a time of celebration – birthday, Christmas, or anniversary. Try to set the date for a time when your life will be reasonably quiet and low in stress. If you are employed, it might be worth thinking about stopping when you have a holiday or can take some time off. Then, if you do have withdrawals, at least you will be away from work at the time. On the other hand, if you do not expect to have withdrawals, it might be beneficial to be at work, as this would help to occupy you. (You should still be aware that withdrawals may occur.)
